Why was the Governor angry with the prison officers after Evans had escaped?
The Governor was angry with Stephens because it was he who saw Evans off safety out of the prison gate. Stephens told him that it was the Governor who ordered him to do so. These words infuriated the Governor since he had not rang him at all. The Governor was angry with Jackson since he did not search Evans' cell properly because Evans had somehow concealed a beard, dog collar and other things to a clerk in his cell. It was his carelessness that helped Evans to escape.
